Getting Into Cloth

Getting Started: Cloth Nappies

Every year, thousands of people choose to use cloth nappies. This saves them money, reduces waste, lowers their impact on the environment, limits the number of chemicals on their babies skin and can help prevent and control nappy rash.

There is an incredible amount of information out there on cloth nappies - however it can very quickly become overwhelming. We hope to try and make your journey into cloth a little bit easier.

Why should I use cloth?

Here are some quick facts.

  • 3.75 million disposable nappies are used every day in Australia and New Zealand alone.

  • The average baby needs 6570 nappies* from birth to toilet training (That is a lot of nappy changes!)

  • In Canberra, the last kerbside audit of household waste showed that 6.1 percent of Canberras waste was nappies.

  • Disposable nappies take up to 500 years to degrade.

  • A 24-27 pack of cloth nappies will cost between $240 and $945. Disposables, on average, will cost $3278.08!

  1. Parents and volunteers, this group provides information on anything and all things cloth. Their website covers anything from the basics (cloth on a budget, nappy types, soiled nappy storage) to cleaning information and more advanced questions.
Their facebook group also has a team of dedicated admins who answer questions personally and can check your wash routine.

A regular podcast explaining all things cloth, Vicki Simpson and Vashti Wadwell are industry leaders in manufacturing, retail and cloth education. They explore cloth in depth and have a fun podcast to listen to.

  2. For those in Canberra, this group was created to advocate for cloth use in Canberra. The founder, Emma Black, has pushed for cloth awareness and the group hosts 'nappychinos' where you can come and meet other like-minded parents, or ask questions.

*The average amount of nappies can be broken down into the following stages.

6-12 months ~ 6 changes per day = 1 080 nappies
12-18 months ~ 6 changes per day = 1 080 nappies
18 months - 2.5 years (average age of toilet training) ~ 4 per day = 1 460 nappies
+ Night nappies from 2 - 5 years = 1068 nappies
= 6 570 nappies!
